Lights, Camera… English! The Ultimate Movie Lesson Plan for ESL

Level:

A2-C2

Time:

3+ hrs

Targets:

Speaking, Grammar, Vocabulary, Writing

Movies are one of the most powerful tools for language learning. They are engaging, memorable, and full of natural language that students actually want to use.

Like you, I’m a huge fan of movies. So when it comes to teaching a film unit in class, I needed a lesson plan that would match my love for the silver screen.

Our course book has a unit on movies, but let’s be honest; teaching movies from a book is like looking at a menu but never tasting the meal.

That’s exactly why I created this all-in-one Movie Unit Pack for ESL and English learners—a complete set of speaking, reading, grammar, vocabulary, and writing activities designed to bring film-based lessons to life, while also being easy to teach and highly engaging for students.

Whether you are teaching intermediate ESL, EFL, English Language Arts, or Film Studies, this resource gives you everything you need to build a full movie-themed unit without hours of planning.

All-In-One Movies ESL Lesson Plan

The ultimate movie lesson plan is here, with 20 pages of movie-related English lessons.

What Students Really Need

In order to feel confident when talking about movies, English learners need to acquire four basic abilities. We want them to be able to:

  • ask and answer movie-related conversation questions
  • understand the difference between watch vs. see and when to use them
  • describe the basic plot of a movie
  • give their opinions about movies

These four target skills are the basis of my activity set. I’ve included bunch of other fun activities, like movie trivia and debate cards, but in the end, (spoiler alert!) I just want them to be able to tell a friend what a movie is about, and whether they liked it or not. So that was what I kept in mind while creating this resource.

Writing Support Made Easy

One of the biggest challenges for students is organizing their ideas when writing about movies.

This all-in-one movie lesson plan includes everything they need:

  • Movie review example
  • Graphic organizer / outline
  • Rating sheet
  • Self-checklist
  • Lined writing pages

Students move step-by-step from ideas → structure → final writing with confidence.

Fun, Interactive Activities

To keep students engaged, this unit also includes:

  • Movie debate cards
  • Movie trivia game
  • Speaking activities and pair role plays

These activities are perfect for encouraging fluency, critical thinking, and classroom discussion.

BONUS: Free Movie Review Writing Template

To help you get started, I’ve also created a FREE Movie Review Writing Template, Ratings Organizer, and Lined Paper Pack.

This free resource helps students:

  • Organize their ideas before writing
  • Structure a clear movie review
  • Reflect on story, characters, and opinions

It’s a perfect companion to the full Movie Unit Pack or a great standalone writing activity.

Why Teachers Love Movie-Based Lessons

Movies are an easy way to:

  • Increase student motivation
  • Encourage natural speaking practice
  • Build vocabulary in context
  • Teach descriptive and opinion writing
  • Create meaningful discussion in class

This unit removes the prep stress and gives you everything in one place.
